7th edition of the Anti-Thrombosis Masterclass (2015)

Last Friday 3rd July 2015, the 7th edition of the Anti-Thrombosis Masterclass took place in Bucharest, Romania. The seminar was hosted by the Central University Library Carol I of Bucharest, whose collaboration, along with the Romanian Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (SRATI), were essential in order to organize the Anti-Thrombosis Masterclass meeting in this unique educational environment. Additionally, the hotel Radisson Blu Bucharest was the venue for the afternoon workshops, in which the participants had interactive sessions with the speakers.

7th Anti-Thrombosis Masterclass 2015In this occasion we had the pleasure to count with a scientific committee headed by Dr. Juan Vicente Llau, who acted as Chairman of the meeting. Rovi, as sole sponsor of the meeting, invited more than 150 international doctors, experts in the venous thromboembolic disease, coming from different countries such as Spain, Turkey, Central America, Lithuania, Estonia and Romania.

The 7th edition of the Anti-Thrombosis Masterclass also counted with the endorsements of three prestigious societies, the Spanish Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (SETH), the Romanian Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (SRATI), and the ISTH (International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis), having the latter supported for the fourth consecutive year this scientific initiative.

Once ROVI welcomed the audience and after a brief introduction of its Pharmaceutical Laboratory and the international presence of Bemiparin, the Chairman welcomed the attendees and introduced the rest of the scientific committee and this edition’s scientific program.

7-anti-thrombosis-masterclas-002The lectures of the different speakers talked about different interesting topics, which can be summarized as follows:

Dr. Jerrold Levy: Cardiothoracic ICU, Duke University, USA, talked about the pathophysiology of Venous Thromboembolic Disease, and, during the afternoon sessions, he shared with the audience a couple of clinical cases based on his experience about bridging therapy.

Dr. Jawed Fareed: Hemostasis & Thrombosis Research Laboratories, Loyola University Medical Center, USA, talked about the history of Heparins and their development during the 20th Century, and he also gave a perspective about the future uses of LMWHs.

Dr. Elena Copaciu: Emergency University Hospital and University of Medicine Bucharest, Romania, talked about VTE risk factors and risk stratification strategies for VTE prevention. In the afternoon, she presented several clinical cases based on her daily clinical practice.

7th Anti-Thrombosis Masterclass 2015Dr. Juan Vicente Llau: Clinic University Hospital of Valencia, Spain, talked about the optimal initiation of thromboprophylaxis in patients undergoing major surgery, defending a post-operative administration of the first dose of LMWH. In the afternoon session, he conducted a very interactive workshop, where he presented some clinical cases about thromboprophylaxis in cancer patients.

Dr. Davide Imberti: Hemostasis and Thrombosis Center, Internal Medicine Department, Piacenza Hospital, Italy, talked about Cancer-associated-Thrombosis and the management of these specific patients. He also gave another lecture about long-term management of VTE in the elderly, highlighting the risk of this special population. During the afternoon workshop, he exposed a series of clinical cases about this kind of patients.

Dr. Andrés Muñoz: Gastrointestinal Cancer Unit, Medical Oncology Service, Gregorio Marañón General University Hospital, Spain, talked about the role of LMWHs in the prevention and treatment of VTE. During the afternoon workshop, he shared with the audience some clinical cases about patients with cancer-associated-thrombosis.

Dr. Ersin Özaslan: Medical Oncology Service at Erciyes University Hospital, Turkey, talked about the outpatient care for VTE Treatment in Cancer Patients, and advanced the results of the TREBECA study, a Turkish observational study in cancer patients with low risk of venous thromboembolism. He also presented some related clinical cases in the afternoon session.

Additionally, and as a novelty this year, the meeting was granted 1,5 Credits from the Spanish Comission of Continuous Education for the medical attendees.

The Anti-Thrombosis Masterclass continues to be an important activity for all healthcare professionals related to the venous thromboembolism field.
