Casey O'Connell «Primary Prophylaxis»

Dr. Casey O’Connell is an Associate Professor in the Jane Anne Nohl Division of Hematology at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California (USC). She did her undergraduate work at Stanford University and completed her medical degree with distinction at The George Washington School of Medicine. She began her career as a clinical researcher at USC’s Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in the area of cancer-related thrombosis by describing the clinical significance of incidental pulmonary embolism identified on routine cancer staging CT scans. Her original work in this area was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and brought this clinical entity to the attention of oncologists worldwide. Dr. O’Connell’s background in cancer-related thrombosis has generated a focused interest in Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPNs), which include Polycythemia Vera, Essential Thrombocytosis and Myelofibrosis. In addition to leading clinical treatment trials for patients with these malignancies, she pursues translational research seeking to discover how they induce arterial and venous thrombosis. Dr. O’Connell is proudest of her accolades for patient care in Southern California and for teaching at the Keck School of Medicine, where she is the Director of the Year II Hematology Course

Anna Falanga «Treatment of VTE»

Anna Falanga, MD, is Full Professor of Hematology at University of Milan Bicocca, in Milan, and Chief of the Department of Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine and the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Center, at the Hospital Papa Giovanni XXIII, in Bergamo, Italy. After having received her medical degree and board certification in internal medicine at the University of Naples, Dr. Falanga obtained the board certification in Hematology at the University of Verona, Italy. Subsequently, she spent three years working as a postdoctoral fellow at the Mario Negri Institute in Milan, Italy, and a further two years at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver, CO, USA. She has long been involved in the field of research on “Cancer & Thrombosis”. For her experience in the field, she is a member of the panel of experts and a co-chair for the preparation of the Guidelines of prophylaxis and treatment of venous thromboembolism in patients with cancer, for both the Italian Society of Medical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the European Society of Medical Oncology.

Dr Anna Falanga has authored more than 300 publications. She has been guest editor of 21 books or journal issues. She has an active role in several professional societies. She has been Chair of the Scientific and Standardization Committee of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) (term 2010-2012), chair (2011) of the Scientific Committee on Hemostasis of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), and President of the Italian Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (SISET) (term 2014-2016). Further, she has been Councilor on Board of the European Hematology Association (EHA) (term 2009-2013), and of the Italian Federation of the Thrombotic Centres (terms 2009-2015). Currently, she is Councilor on Board of the ISTH (term 2014-2020), chair of the SWG of EHA on ‘Bleeding and Thrombosis’, and chair of the European Thrombosis and Hemostasis Alliance (ETHA). In 2009 she received the BACH Investigator Award of the ISTH, and in 2015 the “Harold R. Roberts Medal 2015” of the SSC of ISTH.

Other activities of Dr. Falanga include the organization of numerous scientific conferences, including nine biennial International Conferences on “Thrombosis and Hemostasis Issues in Cancer” (ICTHIC), in Bergamo, Italy, the tenth being planned on April 2020.
